The Permian softball team was able to made quick work of its opponent Tuesday evening, defeating Amarillo Tascosa 10-0 in five innings in District 2-6A play at the Ratliff Softball Complex. The Lady Panthers (17-7-2 overall, 3-1 district) Permian scored three runs in the first inning, two in the second, three in the third and one run in the fourth and fifth to end the game early. Permian finished with 13 hits on the night and Madilyn Martinez took the win after pitching a complete game shutout. “We jumped out and got the hits that we needed,” Permian head coach Kristin Williams said. “We scored in the first inning and took control and that’s what wins ball games.” After retiring the top of the Tascosa order in the top of the first, the Lady Panthers were able to get on the board first thanks to freshman Emma Chavez. Her sacrifice fly drove in Rylee Day to give Permian a 1-0 lead before RBIs from Mikayla Martinez and Kelsi McCall extended the lead to 3-0. Andrea Velasquez was the first Tascosa player to get on base, advancing to first after being hit by a pitch but the Lady Rebels were unable to do anything more after that. As for the Panthers, it was the same combination of Day and Chavez doing the work offensively in the second inning. After Day reached base with a single, Chavez was able to drive her in with a two-run home run over the left field face to make it 5-0 for Permian. Taylor Moore’s single in the top of the third inning was the first hit of the game for the Lady Rebels. But that was the best they could do in that frame. The Lady Rebels (3-16-1, 0-3) struggled offensively, managing just three hits on the night. The Lady Panthers were able to keep the bats going in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from Aliyah Lara and a double from Chavez that drove in two more runs. Chavez finished 3 for 3 for the night with six RBIs. Tascosa’s best scoring chance came in the top of the fifth inning when the Lady Rebels were able to load the bases. But an inning-ending double play facilitated by the Permian outfield kept them Tascosa from scoring a run. Permian was able to end the game by scoring one run in each of the final two innings. The run in the fourth inning came off an RBI single from Hunter Harkrider and the last run came off an RBI double from Chavez to close out the game. “Overall, it was a good game,” Tascosa head coach Kim LeComte said. “I think Permian’s very talented all around on the field. We just couldn’t get any runs across the plate.”
