MIDLAND The Permian Panthers got the second weekend of the high school baseball season off to a good start, opening the Tournament of Champions with a 15-1 victory against Andrews Thursday at Security Bank Ballpark. The Panthers followed that up with a 7-4 victory against El Paso Franklin at Zachery Field. Permian (6-3) didn’t let chilly, foggy conditions become a factor in the early game, jumping on Andrews for nine runs in the first inning. “It creates confidence for our defense and our pitching when we’re able to score runs,” Permian coach Tate Criswell said. “We’re able to score runs when we string together quality at bats.” Permian meets Odessa High at 7 tonight at Security Bank Ballpark in the District 2-6A opener for both teams. All six 2-6A teams were scheduled to play a district game as part of the tournament. “Obviously, with the district game, we want to come out on top in that,” Criswell said. “That’s going to be our first priority as far as how we’re setting up our pitching and everything like that. “We just want to game momentum, take another step in developing a winning program.” Against Andrews, Easton Hernandez went 3 for 4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs to lead the Panthers, who finished with 11 hits. “It went good,” Hernandez said. “I tried to stay as relaxed as possible and help my team out any way I can.” It was so foggy in the first inning that Taylor Sullivan’s bloop single appeared to be lost in the fog. Hernandez followed with his triple, which carried so far it was difficult to tell where it landed, but Hernandez said he was not worried about his chances as he rounded second. “I know my coaches have got me,” he said. “I’ve got trust in my coaches.” Permian took advantage of five walks by Andrews starter Aaron Valenzuela along with four hits and three Mustangs errors in the nine-run first. All the runs scored with two outs as Sullivan, Hernandez and Jared Carrasco strung together consecutive run-scoring hits. Caden Bedrick capped the inning with a two-run single. “We had one bad inning,” Andrews coach Robert Morris said. “It was just one, but you can’t start a game like that.” Bedrick finished 2 for 3, while Carrasco was 2 for 4. Permian starter Teo Banks was credited with the win after holding Andrews to a run on two hits over 2.2 innings. He walked three and struck out four. The Panthers went up 12-0 in the third on Manny Guerro’s sacrifice fly and Aleck Villa’s two-run single. The Mustangs scored their run in the bottom of the third on a single by Gustavo Rodriguez after loading the bases on a pair of walks and Vito Prieto’s single. Permian added two runs in the fourth on J.D. Yandrich’s squeeze bunt and Isaiah Flores’ sacrifice fly. Hernandez wrapped up the scoring with an RBI single in the fifth. >> PERMIAN BEATS EP FRANKLIN: At Zachery Field, Villa singled in the go-ahead run in the fourth inning and Permian held on in a back-and-fourth game. Franklin took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles by Carlos Rascon and Christian Guerrero, but Permian answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Bedrick singled in two runs and Tanner Adams singled in the go-ahead run before Bedrick scored on a double steal. Franklin tied it in the fourth on another RBI single by Guerrero, who was 2 for 3, before Villa drove in Manny Guerrero to put Permian back in front. The Panthers added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Carrasco and an error. Permian starter Jordan Muschalek went 5.1 innings for the win, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits. He walked one and struck out four. Flores got the final five outs for the save, working around two hits and two walks. He struck out one. Franklin starter Andrew Prieve was charged with six earned runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings in taking the loss. He struck out six. >> BRONCHOS GO 1-0-1: In games played at Christensen Stadium in Midland, Odessa High played to a 4-4 tie against Lubbock High before beating Plainview 10-1. Details of the game against Lubbock High were not available. Against Plainview, the Bronchos (5-1-1) broke the game open with six runs in the third inning. Charles McClure and Michael Gonzalez each had two hits and two RBIs. Nick Arenivas, Pilar Ramirez, Jordan Munoz, Zach Attaway and Bobby Salinas also had two hits with Arinevas, Ramirez, Attaway, Gibrian Pena, Salinas and Alex Cadena each driving in a run. Arenivas pitched struck out seven in 5.1 innings for the win, He held the Bulldogs (3-2) to a run on four hits and a walk.
