Not only did Permian have to endure the late hour, but they had to play a different opponent than they had prepared. Universal Academy was suppose to play Permian for first place, but dropped out on the last day due to potentially hazardous road conditions. Lubbock Monterey stepped up in its place.
Permian's Genuwine Powell led all scorers with 23 points. The guard was named to the All-Tournament team.
Head Coach Tim Thomas said he hopes the win means a repeat of last year's season. After winning the tournament in 2017, Permian went on to make it farther in the playoffs than the team had done in more than 25 years.
