The Permian Panthers wrapped up the nondistrict portion of their schedule with an impressive showing, defeating the Los Fresnos Falcons 56-0 Friday at Ratliff Stadium. Ed Williams rushed for three touchdowns and Peyton Powell passed for two scores and ran for another as the Panthers (3-2) turned in their second dominant performance in a row. The shutout was Permian’s first since 2016 against Odessa High. “We’re always going to need to improve, but tonight was a great night for us,” Permian interim coach Jeff Ellison said. “Our defense played outstanding with the shutout. Our offense started out a little bit slow, I thought, but picked it up toward the end. “We has some great performances again by Ed, by Justin (Hammond), by Peyton, by Kaden (Horrell) and our wide outs. I thought our offensive line played well tonight, too.” Williams carried 22 times for 135 yards, scoring on runs of 5, 3 and 17 yards. Powell, who sat out last week’s game with an ankle injury, accounted for 259 of Permian’s 489 total yards. Powell completed 11 of 14 passes for 169 yards and rushed 11 times for 90 yards. “My team was doing its job,” Powell said. “Everybody was doing what they needed to do to get the win. They made my job easy.” The main thing, Ellison said, was the Panthers putting together a solid performance in all areas. “It was a complete team win,” he said. “We shut them out on defense and scored 56 points. We had interceptions. Chase Stell had two interceptions, one for a touchdown. “We always want to improve and get better. There were some mistakes, but we’re going to go back and correct them. But, overall, it was a great team win for us.” Los Fresnos (2-3) was held to just 58 total yards. Three of the Falcons six first downs came by penalty. Christian Maldonado rushed for 29 yards, while quarterbacks Sergio Martinez and Cody Vasquez combined to complete four of 17 passes for 17 yards with three interceptions. Permian opened the game with a 13-play drive from its own 15 to the Los Fresnos 15 only to lose a fumble. The Panther defense responded with the first of four three-and-out stands and the offense made it count as Powell hit Hammond for a 21-yard score with 1:06 left in the first quarter. Hammond caught five passes for 57 yards and rushed three times for 27 yards. After that, the points came in bunches. Permian took a 28-0 halftime lead as Powell and Williams ran for touchdowns. Powell then hit Mason Sellers for a 35-yard score with 1:03 left in the half. Sellers caught two passes for 70 yards. Williams ran for two more TDs in the third quarter, then Stell got the defense involved. Stell returned his first pick to the Los Fresnos 5, setting up a 1-yard TD run by Adam Martinez, then went 35 yards to score with his second on the Falcons’ second play of the series.
