ECISD honors high school gymnasts

The Ector County Independent School District Board of Trustees honored gymnasts from Odessa High School and Permian High School on June 20. Both boys’ teams earned trophies at the state championship meet by cracking the top 6 – Permian placed fifth and the OHS boys took sixth. It was the first team trophy in the history of the OHS program. Three Panthers earned All-State distinction (Esteban Rodriguez, Brandon Dominguez and Ryan Dominguez) while two (Kaleb Redwine and Clayton King) from OHS made All-State, too. Kaleb and Clayton then participated as members of Team Texas in the National Gymnastics Meet held at Arizona State University in late May. In the team competition, Team Texas came in second place just behind team Arizona by 2.6 pts. Kaleb took second on rings, fourth on parallel bars and ninth on high bar. Clayton tied for 10th place on the floor exercise. OHS team members were: Kaleb, Clayton, David Arroyo, Nick Drakus, Adrian Arreola, David Bo Adjani, Alan Melchor, Cesar Anguiano, Brenden Fletcher and Jared Villegas. Head coach is Tony Gonzalez and assistant coach is Omar Loya. Permian team members were: Donovan Kilgore, Esteban Rodriguez, Darryl Stephens, Brandon Dominguez, Jadè Guerrero, Erick Mendoza, Ryan Dominguez, Ian Santos, Coltyn Roemisch, Jordan Delapaz, Rudy Alaniz, Jonathan Gonzalez and Caden Bugg. Head Coach Christopher Soto. In the girls’ competition, the Permian Lady Panthers took seventh place, just missing a trophy. Team members were: Caitlynn Cordle, Ali Presley, Briana King, Rose Aguilar, Joannaly Gonzalez, C.J. King, Brinley Gwilliam, Charity Vore, Bridgett Pando and Shailey Watson. Brittany Parades was the lone state qualifier from OHS and she earned a spot in the Top 20 individuals on the floor exercise by finishing 19th. Permian High School girls’ coach Brandi Pettus was named the Texas High School Coaches Association Girls Coach of the Year at the state meet. Also during this meet, ECISD executive director of athletics Todd Vesely earned the Texas High School Girls Coaches Association Hall of Honor Award for his extraordinary achievements and many outstanding contributions to the sport of gymnastics in Texas. In 23 years as Permian High School’s gymnastics coach, Coach Vesely’s teams won 13 regional titles, made 17 straight trips to the state meet, won five state championships and four national titles.
