The documentary series “The Legends of Texas High School Football” will spotlight Permian High School when it airs in August on FOX Sports Southwest. Jeff Power, who owns Jeff Power TV Productions LLC, said “The Legends of Texas High School Football The Permian Panthers Story” will air at 7 p.m. Aug. 15. It will be rebroadcast multiple times and an extended version will be available on DVD after that. A local television station also is expected to air it. “These documentaries are Texas high school football meets ‘Texas Country Reporter.’ It’s the same kind of concept where we go into these towns and give a little history of town and the industry that makes that town go … and we tell the football story,” Power said. Power said it was surprising that so much attention was accorded the 1988 Permian season because of the movie “Friday Night Lights.” “This documentary will tell the rest of the story,” Power said. He added that it will be a positive story that will cover everything from when the high school opened in 1959 to the present day. The championship years will be highlighted, but the years Permian came up second also will be discussed. The band, principals, coaches, teachers and members of the Pepettes and cheerleading squad also will be included, along with references to Odessa High School and Lee High School in Midland. “We’re going to remember the gymnastics success Permian has had,” Power said. Executive Director of Athletics Todd Vesely was a coach of gymnastics teams that did really well. “I think it’s important to recognize that the school has been successful in a lot of different ways. … We have a lot of stuff. There’s a lot of area to cover,” Power said. He expressed thanks to Buddy Hale, an assistant principal at Permian, for his help. Power will be in Odessa today for a meet-and-greet, to talk to potential sponsors and a Q&A about the documentary to “give people peace of mind.” “This will be a bright light that they will be very proud of,” Power said. Power said he started Jeff Power TV Productions LLC in 2010. Power said he has previously made football documentaries about Abilene, Brownwood, Lake Travis, Cuero and the rivalry between Port Neches-Groves and Nederland. As a tie-in, Port Neches-Groves beat Permian in 1975, Power said. Permian has vied for 11 state titles and won six, Power said. He also created a basketball documentary called “The Hardin-Jefferson High Flying Hawks Story.” The team won a state championship in 1991. Because he has to pay for the air time on FOX Sports Southwest, he has to find sponsorships for the cost of air time and production. Power said he produces the commercials, as well. He started the Permian documentary almost exactly a year ago. “As time goes on, you basically interview players as you go and you find sponsors as you go,” Power said.
