The Permian boys golf team came through with the key shots down the stretch on Tuesday.

The Panthers walked away with the District 2-6A championship after emerging with a five shot victory over Wolfforth Frenship at Diamondback Golf Club.

Permian backed up an opening round of 302 with a final round of 304 and it was that consistent play that head coach Gerald Huddleston said was the difference.

“We’ve been trying to get two days put together,” Huddleston said. “It came down to the last three holes with the last two groups and we were able to play the way we’re capable.”

The tournament turned into a three-team race at the halfway point with Permian, Frenship and San Angelo Central separating from the pack, but the Panthers holed some important putts on the tough greens as Frenship finished with a score of 611 and Central followed that at 619.

“The pins were set in difficult spots,” Huddleston said. “Those greens are undulating and have a lot of breaks and they put them in difficult spots.”

Will Adams paced Permian with a two-round total of 145 to finish second overall.

“Will is consistent and a competitor and he loves the moment,” Huddleston said. “He came through today. He hit 14 or 15 greens and I didn’t see him miss a fairway.”
Sophomore Jayden Chavez shot a final round 74 to finish in fifth place for Permian with a score of 150.

“His short game is incredible,” Huddleston said of Chavez. “He holed out at No. 3 from about 30 yards for birdie.”
Matthew Trotter and Tyler Trotter chipped in some quality rounds to finish with scores of 156 and 158, while Breyden Weatherford capped off the scoring for Permian with a 162.

“I was proud of the Trotter brothers. They’ve been in the 70s for us all year,” Huddleston said. “And Breyden, our No. 5 guy, came through with a key 79 that sealed the deal.”
Central’s Jansen Smith walked away with the individual medalist honors after a final round 69 left him at 140, five shots ahead of Adams.

Odessa High wrapped up the tournament in eighth place with a team score of 702
Anthony Maldonado led the Bronchos with a score of 171.

From here, the Panthers will turn their attention to the Region I-6A tournament April 26-27 at the Texas Star Golf Course in Euless.

Permian hasn’t played the course as a team this season, but Huddleston has a plan in place to get his squad the information it needs heading into a new environment.
“We’re going to get a practice round before the tournament and I have a couple buddies in Euless that I’ll call who can get me a scouting report,” he said. “It’s very important to know that course. They were used to Diamondback after playing it six times. It’s my job to get them ready.”
